Gastric cancer is the most common malignant neoplasm among Koreans. The age-adjusted annual incidence rate for the World population as of 1991 1992 in Seoul was 60.6 in males and 24.6 in females. And the truncated rates for those 35-64 years of age were 100.2 in males and 44.5 in females. The cumulative rates for the age spans 0-74 were 7.6% in the male and 3.1% in the female. The age-adjusted annual mortality rate as of 1991 in Seoul was 43.1 and 17.2 for the male and female, respectively. The prevalence, in terms of annual admission rate per 100, 000, of gastric cancer in whole country of Korea was estimated to be 104.0 and 50. 1 as of 1990 for the male and female, respectively.
As a precursor lesion for the gastric cancer, the adenomatous polyposis coli was reported in Korea, which is associated with increased risk of gastric cancer as high as 7 times. Several foods and dietary factors associated with an increased or decreased risk of gastric cancer among Koreans are presented.
